About the position
We are seeking a PhD candidate to investigate the biogeography of above- and belowground fungi associated with several Scalesia species. The project aims to develop an integrated view of the diversity and distribution of three components of the fungal microbiome: arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), yeasts, and fungal pathogens colonizing roots and leaves. This system offers a unique opportunity to test whether the fungal plant microbiome follows classic biogeography theory, while characterizing its spatial distribution, taxonomic diversity, and functional diversity. Additionally, you will assess how these fungal communities influence plant establishment, fitness, and resilience to abiotic and biotic stress.
Key Responsibilities
- Employ molecular ecology, microbiology techniques, plant bioassays, field sampling, and bioinformatic tools to achieve research aims.
- Closely collaborate with European and Ecuadorian students and partners.
- Communicate research through presentations at national and international conferences and via peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals.
- Supervise HBO and MSc students.
- Contribute to maintaining a friendly, inclusive, and collaborative working atmosphere within the research group.
Requirements
- Background in molecular ecology, microbiology, plant biology, or a related field.
- Experience with field sampling and bioinformatics is an advantage.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive research environment.
