Job for Researchers: Researcher (forskare) in stock assessment and advice for fisheries management

About the Role

The Department of Aquatic Resources at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) invites applications for a permanent position as a Researcher (forskare) in stock assessment and advice for fisheries management. You will join the stock assessment unit at the Institute of Marine Research, conducting research and stock assessments on fish and shellfish while providing scientific advice for fisheries at both national and international levels. Work is carried out in close collaboration with other units within SLU Aqua, contributing to research fields such as fisheries monitoring, climate change impacts, marine food webs, and ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM). Extensive collaboration with international bodies like the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is expected and encouraged, along with active pursuit of external research funding.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze large datasets for input into stock assessments and biological advice
• Follow and support the transition to next-generation assessment models
• Perform fish stock assessments
• Participate in national and international expert groups
• Contribute to scientific advice for fisheries management
• Produce scientific publications and national/international reports
• Apply for research funding
• Engage in teaching, mentoring, internal competence building, and outreach

Your Profile

• PhD in quantitative analysis of biological systems (e.g., statistics, mathematics, modelling, marine biology, fisheries biology or related field)
• Strong quantitative skills in analysis, statistics, and modelling
• Proficiency in the R programming language; familiarity with TMB is particularly valued
• Experience with version control pipelines
• Preferably experience in fisheries stock assessment, especially integrated and state-space models, simulations, and management strategy evaluations
• Good scientific publication record
• Experience in marine or fisheries management, including developing and delivering advice, is beneficial
• Ability to work independently and in teams, delivering results (reports, analyses, papers) within deadlines
• Excellent oral and written English skills; Swedish knowledge is favorably considered
• Non-Swedish speakers are expected to learn Swedish after appointment (SLU arranges courses)
• Strong collaboration, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with capacity for independent work
