About the position
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join a research project focused on the sustainable biocontrol of rice grain rot in Vietnam, based at the University of Leuven. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of environmentally friendly disease management strategies for one of the world’s most important staple crops.
Research Context
Rice grain rot, caused by bacterial pathogens, poses a significant threat to rice production in Vietnam, leading to substantial yield losses and reduced grain quality. Current control methods often rely on chemical pesticides, which can have negative environmental and health impacts. This PhD project aims to develop sustainable biocontrol alternatives by investigating beneficial microorganisms and natural compounds that can suppress the disease. The research will involve field studies in Vietnam, laboratory experiments, and molecular analyses to understand pathogen biology and host-pathogen interactions.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in plant pathology, microbiology, or a related field. The ideal candidate should have:
- A Master’s degree in plant pathology, microbiology, molecular biology, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience with microbiological techniques, including isolation, cultivation, and identification of bacteria or fungi.
- Knowledge of plant disease management and biocontrol principles.
- Excellent English communication skills (both written and spoken).
- Willingness to conduct fieldwork in Vietnam and collaborate with local partners.
- Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and executing experiments to identify and characterize potential biocontrol agents against rice grain rot pathogens. This includes conducting laboratory assays, greenhouse trials, and field experiments in Vietnam. The PhD student will also analyze data using statistical methods, prepare scientific manuscripts for publication, and present findings at international conferences. Collaboration with Vietnamese research institutions and local farmers will be an integral part of the project.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree by the start date of the position. The PhD position is funded for a period of four years, subject to a positive evaluation after the first year.
