About the role

DTU Physics is seeking talented postdoctoral researchers to develop new types of diamond-based magnetic microscopes for contactless imaging of magnetic fields induced in biological tissue samples. The project aims to build the world’s fastest and most sensitive microscope capable of resolving magnetic fields with microscopic resolution. To achieve this goal, you will develop and implement advanced protocols for quantum coherent spin control, optical interrogation, and readout of colour centres, while allowing integration with target samples.

The experiments will be conducted at DTU Physics. The project includes close collaboration with industrial partners to address key engineering challenges, as well as with researchers in neuroscience and the semiconductor industry on relevant use cases.

Responsibilities

Your main responsibilities revolve around developing an experimental platform for micro-scale quantum imaging of faint magnetic fields. You will apply the unique magneto-optical properties of nitrogen-vacancy colour centres in diamond, with the diamonds developed and supplied by one of the project collaborators. The goal is to achieve the first contactless imaging of magnetic fields induced by electrical activity in brain tissue samples and integrated circuits.

Qualifications

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree or equivalent. We expect you to have:

  • Strong experience in experimental quantum optics or quantum physics
  • Skills in designing and engineering optical setups
  • Experience with coherent control of quantum systems
  • Competence in electronics design and hardware control
  • Ability to acquire and process large datasets
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
  • Motivation to supervise and mentor students from BSc to PhD level
  • A track record of publishing high-quality research

Working environment

The positions are anchored in the Section for Quantum Physics and Information Technology (QPIT) at DTU Physics. You will join a collaborative team of doctoral researchers, postdocs, BSc and MSc students, and technical specialists working on solid-state quantum sensing. The section has around 60 members from more than 15 nationalities, including faculty, PhD students, postdocs, engineers, and administrators. QPIT focuses on fundamental quantum physics and the development of emerging quantum technologies, with strong support for innovation and industry partnerships.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, with the allowance agreed with the relevant union. The positions are full time and the period of employment is two years, with a starting date as soon as possible.
