The Bavarian State Institute of Forestry and Forest Research (LWF) is seeking a Research Associate (m/f/d) for the Department of “Soil, Climate, Tree Species Selection”. The position is linked to the project “Further Development of the Forest Drought Monitor Bavaria and Extension to Brandenburg” and is to be filled at the earliest possible date. The contract is fixed-term until 31 May 2027 and the position is remunerated according to pay group 13 TV-L.

About the project

The aim of the project is to further develop the online service waldduerremonitor.de for Bavaria and to transfer it to the federal state of Brandenburg. Existing Python scripts and ArcGIS applications will be adapted and optimised, and geodata from Brandenburg will be integrated in cooperation with the State Competence Centre for Forestry Eberswalde (LFE).

Responsibilities

  • Migrating the Forest Drought Monitor Bavaria from ArcGIS Online to ArcGIS Enterprise
  • Further developing the content of the monitor, including a short-term forecast (5–7 days) and the display of depth profiles
  • Setting up a comparable “Forest Drought Monitor Brandenburg”
  • Preparing and processing geodata on soil and vegetation from Brandenburg for water-balance modelling using the LWF-Brook90 program

Requirements

Essential

  • Completed university degree in geoecology, meteorology, hydrology, forest sciences or a comparable field of study
  • Extensive programming experience; sound knowledge of Python is mandatory
  • Advanced GIS knowledge of the ArcGIS product platform (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise)
  • Solid knowledge of data processing workflows and geodatabases
  • Goal-oriented working style, strong teamwork skills and a high degree of initiative
  • Good German language skills

Desirable

  • Experience in interpreting meteorological and hydrological data
  • Experience in water-balance modelling, ideally with the LWF-Brook90 program
