About the Role

The MOE START Scheme (Applied Research Fellowship) at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) offers an opportunity for outstanding doctoral candidates and recent PhD graduates to undertake advanced training and research at a leading overseas university for one year. This Fixed Term appointment sits within the Division of Food, Chemical and Biotechnology and is part of SIT’s Faculty scheme of service.

The Scheme is co-funded by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and SIT to encourage and support young Singaporeans interested in pursuing an academic career at SIT. Fellows receive financial support and academic mentorship during their postdoctoral training. Upon completion of the Fellowship, awardees will be considered for an Assistant Professorship at SIT.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Singapore citizen.
  • Doctoral candidates who have recently completed, or are about to complete, their studies in a discipline under the supported areas for START.
  • Excellent academic record with a high degree of proficiency and motivation in the selected research area.
  • Have been accepted for, or have applied for, postdoctoral training at a leading overseas university in a research area aligned with SIT’s supported areas.
  • A keen interest in an academic career.

Value of the Fellowship

Fellows receive comprehensive financial support, including:

  • Monthly stipend.
  • Overseas maintenance allowance.
  • Return economy airfare.
  • Conference and fieldwork grants.
  • Overseas medical insurance.

Each Fellow is also assigned a SIT faculty mentor throughout their postdoctoral training and has opportunities to participate in faculty development programmes.

Duration and Service Commitment

The Fellowship is tenable for one year. On an exceptional basis, a two-year programme may be supported. A service commitment of one year is required for every year of sponsorship.
