Job for Researchers: Ecological Genetics Technician – Wageningen University & Research, Netherlands

About the Role

Wageningen University & Research is seeking a (Medior) Ecological Genetics Technician (24–32 hours per week) to join its Animal Ecology Team. In this role, you will apply molecular techniques to support nature conservation and ecological research. You will work on diverse projects simultaneously, collaborating with a dynamic team of researchers, laboratory staff, and field technicians. The ideal candidate is accurate, analytical, flexible, and communicative, with a strong affinity for ecological challenges.

Responsibilities

• Perform and, where appropriate, develop molecular laboratory analyses for population genetic research and (e)DNA-based biodiversity assessments (metabarcoding).
• Analyse samples of low quality and quantity, including non-invasive animal samples, environmental DNA (eDNA), and ancient DNA.
• Work in laboratory facilities specifically designed for handling such sensitive material.
• Contribute to research projects for governments, land managers, NGOs, businesses, and scientific programmes, focusing on conservation and management of wild fauna.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications & Experience

• A completed Bachelor’s degree (HBO level) in molecular biological laboratory research (e.g., Molecular Biology, Molecular Life Sciences) or in animal sciences with a molecular focus.
• Experience with a variety of DNA extraction protocols for both plant and animal material, including invasive and preferably non-invasive samples (e.g., faeces, hair, swabs).
• Awareness of contamination/cross-contamination sources and knowledge of prevention measures.
• Team player with strong communication, organisational, and proactive skills; flexible, resilient under pressure, and quality-oriented.
• Affinity for ecological research and interest in developing innovative methodologies and laboratory protocols.

Desirable Experience

• Environmental DNA (eDNA) protocols, including DNA extraction and PCR setup.
• DNA processing for SNP analysis, amplicon sequencing, whole-genome sequencing, and/or genotyping-by-sequencing, including NGS library preparation and sample multiplexing.
• Sequence analysis (alignment, phylogenetics, primer design, DNA barcoding).
• Nanopore sequencing (MinION) and quantitative PCR (qPCR or ddPCR).

What We Offer

• A competitive gross salary between €3,231 and €4,929 per month for a full-time working week of 36 hours, in accordance with CLA Wageningen Research (scale 8–9). This position is for 24–32 hours per week.
