About the role

The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in social sciences and statistics for a full-time fixed-term contract (CDD) of 24 months, hosted at the Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Sciences, Innovations, Sociétés (LISIS) in Champs-sur-Marne (77454). The position is attached to the PEPR Transform programme (PC2) and starts on 2 November 2026. Reference: UMR9003-BAPBED-002. Research domain: Spaces, territories, societies. The offer is open to candidates holding a title recognising the quality of disabled worker.

Mission

The postdoctoral project aims to enrich and exploit data in order to analyse the factors explaining the establishment of territorial food systems (SAT) actors and to measure their impacts on food systems at the territorial scale. Research will address the following questions:

• Which existing and missing data can help circumscribe the location, diversity and dynamics of SAT actors?
• What social, economic, geographic and agronomic characteristics define the territories where SAT actors settle and develop?
• Is the densification of SAT actors in certain territories correlated with more sustainable agricultural practices?

The work will be conducted within a participatory research approach associating researchers and territorial actors (local authorities, chambers of agriculture, associations, distribution networks).

Responsibilities

• Evaluate the quality, representativeness and biases of the ObSAT databases by comparison with other national and European sources (agricultural census, RICA, SIRENE, Agence Bio, FSDN, etc.).
• Analyse the territorial determinants of SAT development using socio-economic, agricultural and geographic data as well as local food policies, mobilising statistical and spatial analyses.
• Quantify the impacts of SAT at territorial scale, contributing to a national data collection on representative samples of SAT actors and crossing ObSAT data with indicators of sustainable practices, population health and price evolution.
• Carry out complementary qualitative surveys if necessary in the pilot territories of the PLAT4TERFOOD project.
• Promote results through scientific publications, communications, feedback to partners and methodological notes when relevant.

Candidate profile

Required qualifications and skills

• PhD in quantitative sociology, quantitative geography, economics or agronomy.
• Good knowledge of food systems and agricultural worlds.
• Knowledge of short food supply chains and territorial food policy issues is an asset.

Work environment

The position is part of PEPR Transform, within PC2 dedicated to the study of third-sector actors and projects supporting agri-food transitions. The third sector is understood broadly: non-market actors (associations, trade unions), non-profit or limited-profit market actors (social and solidarity economy, professional groups), and small-scale for-profit actors (cooperatives).

The recruited researcher will join a large team of scientists, mainly sociologists and economists, hosted at LISIS, a major French laboratory for the study of science and technology in society.
