About the position
KU Leuven invites applications for a full-time PhD position in the Operations Management research group (Faculty of Economics and Business). The successful candidate will develop and implement practical prediction models for protected cultivation systems in soft fruit production, focusing on strawberries and Rubus crops (raspberries, blackberries). This applied, results-oriented project combines data acquisition, model development, and real-world validation.
Research Focus
- Analyze sensor-based climate data (e.g., temperature, relative humidity) to simulate inside microclimate conditions based on outdoor weather and different cropping systems.
- Develop and refine prediction models for pest and fungal disease risks.
- Explore two modeling approaches: mechanistic (white-box) models using regression techniques, and data-driven (black-box) models including neural networks, enhanced with explainable AI (SHAP, LIME, ICE plots).
- Integrate phenological models with AI to predict pest occurrence and fungal infection risks, validated through real-world case studies in protected soft fruit systems.
- Outcome: robust, hybrid prediction systems combining biological understanding with advanced AI for improved grower decision support.
Responsibilities
- Conduct independent research leading to a doctoral degree (PhD) within a maximum of four years (upon successful yearly evaluations).
- Provide limited guidance to Bachelor and Master students, participate in teaching activities, and supervise exams (maximum 20% load).
- Participate in seminars and international conferences.
- Enroll in the PhD program of the Faculty of Economics and Business at KU Leuven, including 21 ECTS of relevant coursework.
Requirements
- Recently completed (or about to complete by 2026) a Master’s degree in Engineering, Business Engineering, Mathematics, Data Science, Operations Research, Operations Management, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a similar field with an equivalent academic level.
- Excellent academic results (on average distinction level or higher) in prior studies.
- Solid mathematically oriented background and strong programming skills.
- Ability to conduct independent research (demonstrated, e.g., by an excellent MSc thesis) and collaborate in teams.
- Excellent command of spoken and written English; good communication skills. Knowledge of Dutch is an asset but not mandatory.
- Willingness to participate in seminars, conferences, and the PhD program, and to engage in limited teaching and student supervision.
We Offer
- A full-time PhD position for a maximum of four years (upon successful yearly evaluations).
- Competitive salary (conform official university scales, salary scale 43).
- Insurance coverage (health insurance and third-party liability insurance).
- Free public transport, access to KU Leuven sports and cultural facilities at special rates, Ecocheques, and more.
- Numerous opportunities for personal growth: conference participation, doctoral schools courses, educational initiatives, and publication opportunities.
- A social, tolerant, and constructive working environment in Brussels and Leuven.
