About the role

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) invites applications for a PhD position in Technology, focusing on biomethanation of syngas with climate and techno-economic analysis. This full-time, fixed-term doctoral employment (4 years) is based at the Department of Energy and Technology in Uppsala, Sweden. The successful candidate will become part of the national interdisciplinary Biogas Solutions Research Centre (BSRC).

Project description

Biomethane from anaerobic digestion is key to reducing fossil fuel dependence. This project explores biomethanation of syngas produced by thermal gasification of lignocellulosic biomass (e.g., forest residues), integrated with conventional biogas plants and external green hydrogen from water electrolysis (CCU). The aim is to evaluate energy balance, climate impact, and techno-economic performance of different system scenarios.

Responsibilities

  • Model and simulate system scenarios from feedstock supply through thermal gasification to biomethane production
  • Integrate syngas biomethanation with existing anaerobic digestion and external hydrogen
  • Critically review scientific literature, publish results in journals, and present at conferences
  • Complete doctoral coursework and contribute to departmental activities

Eligibility requirements

General entry requirements

  • Degree at advanced level (Master’s or equivalent), or completed 240 higher education credits including 60 credits at advanced level
  • Equivalent knowledge acquired in another manner

Specific entry requirements

  • At least 90 credits in technology-related subjects, including an independent project and at least 30 credits at advanced level

Language

  • English proficiency corresponding to Swedish upper secondary English B/6

Qualifications
