About the position

The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) invites applications for the Applied Research Fellowship under the Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent (START) Scheme. This fellowship supports outstanding Singaporean doctoral candidates or recent graduates to pursue advanced training or research at a leading overseas university for one year, with a possible extension to two years on an exceptional basis.

About the Fellowship

The fellowship provides financial support, academic mentorship, and a pathway to an academic career at SIT. Upon completion, awardees will be considered for an Assistant Professorship.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

• Singapore citizen
• Doctoral candidates who have recently completed or are about to complete their studies in a discipline under the supported areas for START
• Excellent academic record with high proficiency and motivation for the selected research area
• Have been accepted or have applied for a postdoctoral training at a leading overseas university in a research area aligned with SIT’s supported areas
• A keen interest in an academic career

Service Commitment

One year for every year of sponsorship.

Supported Research Areas

• Food, Chemical and Biotechnology
  • Sustainable and functional food: sustainable food systems and circular food economy (e.g., alternative proteins, upcycled ingredients); AI and automation in food manufacturing (e.g., smart sensors, digital twins, AI-driven quality control); food safety (e.g., supply chain tracking, blockchain)
  • Biotechnology: host strain screening and engineering for microbial bioprocess development; microbial physiology and adaptation for industrial applications; high-throughput screening and automation for strain optimization; bioprospecting for novel microbial hosts, enzymes, and metabolites
  • (Bio)pharmaceuticals: processing science and technology for bio- and chemical transformations, separations, purifications, and formulation; modelling of processing steps and whole processes for innovation, design, optimisation, and control
  • Process control: process modelling, control, and optimization for chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing; data-driven modelling and machine learning applications; advanced process control (APC); model predictive control (MPC); digital twins and real-time monitoring; process analytical technology (PAT); process intensification and sustainability

Application Process

Applications are open throughout the year. Applications received before 15 January 2026 will be considered for the 2026 intake. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by the respective clusters throughout the year. Final interviews by the Panel for the 2026 intake will take place from mid-March to end April 2026. Awards will be finalised by July 2026.
