How to apply

About the position

Applications are invited for a Research Grant (BI) within the project “Valorisation of beech nuts (Fagus sylvatica L.) through their physico-chemical, functional and nutritional characterisation”, funded by the institution’s own resources at the Instituto Politécnico de Bragança (IPB). This position offers an excellent opportunity for doctoral candidates to contribute to innovative research on underutilised forest resources.

Research Context

The project aims to comprehensively characterise beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) fruits and the oil derived from them. The work will assess chemical composition, antioxidant properties, and potential for use as a functional ingredient, while also identifying chemical markers associated with geographical origin. This research has implications for food science, sustainable resource utilisation, and regional product valorisation.

Work Plan

The selected candidate will undertake the following tasks: (1) collection, preparation, and preservation of beech fruit samples; (2) physico-chemical characterisation of the fruits; (3) extraction and characterisation of oil from beech fruits; (4) characterisation of the profile of volatile compounds; and (5) statistical processing and chemometric analysis of results, including interpretation, dissemination, and exploitation of findings.

Scientific Area

Food Engineering / Food Science and Technology / Biosystems Engineering

Admission Requirements

  • Enrolment in a PhD programme in Biosystems Science and Technology / Biosystems Engineering, OR
  • Enrolment in a non-degree-awarding course that forms part of the educational programme of a higher education institution.
