Description
About the role
This PhD position is part of the NWO-funded VIDI project GPS4FoodSafety at Wageningen University & Research. The project focuses on developing novel routes for achieving molecular selectivity in ambient ionization for portable mass spectrometry, enabling detection of natural toxins in crops and water at the point of need.
You will work at the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry under the supervision of Dr. Gert Salentijn, Prof. Han Zuilhof, and Dr. Laura Righetti, in close collaboration with Wageningen Food Safety Research. Your research will involve chemical modification of cellulose paper to create selective solid-phase extraction devices for plant and cyanobacterial toxins, as well as 3D-printing and rapid prototyping for modular sample handling and integration with portable mass spectrometers.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute analytical workflows for molecular identification of toxins using portable mass spectrometry.
- Design research questions, experimental approaches, and perform laboratory experiments and pilot studies together with project stakeholders.
- Report findings through peer-reviewed publications and conference contributions.
- Supervise BSc and MSc students in laboratory courses and thesis projects.
- Participate in the graduate school training program to develop field-specific, general scientific, and soft skills.
Requirements
- A successfully completed MSc degree in (bio)analytical chemistry (preferred), food chemistry, food safety, or a related field.
- Strong interest and demonstrable skills in analytical chemistry, preferably mass spectrometry.
- Knowledge of instrumental analysis of plant or cyanobacterial toxins is preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English at C1 level.
- A critical scientific attitude, strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a multicultural, multidisciplinary team.

- A fully funded PhD position with a gross salary starting at €3,059 per month in the first year, rising to €3,881 in the fourth year (CAO-NU scale P, full-time 38 hours/week).
