Doctoral Fellowship: Life cycle of red algae – plasticity and resilience in the face of climate change (H/F)
About the Role
The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) is offering a 36-month doctoral contract within the Laboratoire de Biologie Intégrative des Modèles Marins, based at the Station Biologique de Roscoff (UMR 8227), in Roscoff, Brittany, France. The position will begin on November 1, 2026, and offers a salary of at least €2,300 per month. The selected candidate will be enrolled in the Doctoral School “Complexité du vivant” (515) at Sorbonne University in Paris.
Research Project
This project investigates the life cycle of red algae, a group of ecologically and economically significant marine organisms. Red algae such as Gracilaria chilensis support coastal biodiversity and are valued for their phycocolloids and bioactive compounds. Their complex three-phase life cycle influences population dynamics, dispersal, and resilience to environmental change. However, natural populations frequently exhibit atypical reproductive phenotypes, including asexual reproduction (apospory, apogamy) and mixed-phase reproductive structures on a single thallus. The underlying mechanisms and ecological consequences of these phenotypes remain largely unknown.
Using G. chilensis as a model, this interdisciplinary project combines genomics, transcriptomics, physiology, and metabolic network modeling to identify the genetic, physiological, and environmental factors controlling life cycle transitions.
Key Objective
- Determine whether changes in reproductive phenotype are associated with modifications in metabolic network organization.
Work Environment
The research will take place at the Roscoff Biological Station, a marine biology and oceanography institute employing around 200 people. The project is funded by the CNRS Mission for Transversal and Interdisciplinary Initiatives (MITI) and involves close collaboration with the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (UC Chile) and the Southern University of Chile (UACh). The thesis is jointly supervised by Agnieszka Lipinska (Roscoff), Sylvain Faugeron (UC Chile), and Marie-Laure Guillemin (UACh).
Contract and Benefits
