About the Role

We are inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) to investigate structure-function relationships in methanogenic microbiomes. The project focuses on anaerobic microbial communities that play a crucial role in food fermentations, intestinal health, and waste bioprocessing in anaerobic digesters. Substrates are converted into an array of products through complex networks of cooperating microorganisms. By imposing different conditions, distinct product-formation pathways and guilds of microorganisms become active. The objective is to unravel the roles of these microorganisms and eventually obtain a quantitative description of the overall process.

The research will leverage the UNLOCK experimental infrastructure, which enables parallelized high-resolution phenotypic characterisation of microbiomes in bioreactors. Phenotypic characterisation will be combined with genotypic characterisation in collaboration with UNLOCK partners in Wageningen. The project combines laboratory bioreactor experiments with data processing and process modelling to build a quantitative framework. A strong affinity for lab work and microbial communities, combined with computational and modelling skills, is highly desirable. The resulting model will support societal applications that rely on understanding and controlling anaerobic microbiomes.

Key Responsibilities

Job Requirements

  • A Master’s degree (MSc) in life sciences, biotechnology, microbial ecology, microbiology, or a closely related field
  • Strong affinity for laboratory experiments with microbial communities
  • Proven competence in computational procedures for data processing and/or bioprocess modelling
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary, international team
  • Proficiency in English (both spoken and written) at a level suitable for PhD studies (see TU Delft Graduate School admission requirements)

Conditions of Employment

  • The position is offered for a total duration of 4 years, divided into two contracts: an initial 1.5-year contract with a formal go/no-go progress assessment within 15 months, followed by a second contract for the remaining 2.5 years upon satisfactory performance.
  • Salary ranges from €3,059 to €3,881 gross per month (first to fourth year) based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
