About the Role

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), at the Department of Forest Bioeconomy and Technology, invites applications for a motivated postdoctoral researcher to develop and apply environmental DNA (eDNA) as a tool for early detection of forest pathogens. Combining molecular biological methods with field studies and data analysis, you will enhance preparedness against forest diseases and promote sustainable forestry practices. About the Project

This postdoctoral project focuses on developing new techniques for collecting and analyzing airborne eDNA in forest environments, targeting fungi and insects that cause substantial damage to Swedish forestry. The collaboration includes Komatsu Forest, Sveaskog, the Forest Technology Cluster, SLU Umeå, and Umeå University, providing a unique intersection of molecular biology, forest technology, and applied innovation.

The goal is to utilize existing filters in forest machines to collect eDNA, enabling cost-efficient continuous monitoring. Combining samples from machines operating in different regions with GPS and time data will map the occurrence of pests and pathogens in space and time. The project also develops new sampling technology adapted for forwarders. Results will improve understanding of pathogen spread and dynamics, supporting new forest health monitoring tools. Strong applied potential may lead to commercialization and patenting of innovative collection technologies.

Your Profile

We primarily seek candidates with a PhD degree (obtained within the past three years) in molecular biology, microbiology, biotechnology, ecology, bioinformatics, or related disciplines.

Required qualifications

  • Experience with DNA-based analytical methods (e.g., qPCR, sequencing, metabarcoding, or eDNA)
  • Excellent command of English, spoken and written

Meritorious qualifications

  • Experience with air sampling, field studies, pathogen detection, or bioinformatic analysis
  • Experience handling large datasets or geographical data (e.g., GPS/GIS)

  1. Scientific excellence in molecular biology, microbiology, or eDNA technology
  2. Proven ability to work independently and contribute to new methods development
