About the position

The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) is recruiting an Ingénieur d’étude (H/F) to study pollinators and insect collections, based at the Laboratoire d’Écologie Alpine (LECA) in Grenoble, Isère. The position is a 12-month fixed-term contract (CDD), full time, to be filled on 1 November 2026.

About the laboratory

LECA is an ecology research laboratory located at the Université Grenoble Alpes (UMR5553). This position is opened within the framework of the PEPR Dynabiod programme.

Missions

You will study insect collections held in museums, associations, and laboratories across France (and possibly abroad), organise and take part in an inventory campaign of pollinating insects along altitudinal gradients, capture and photograph insects in the field, process the images, and train a vision model for automatic taxonomic recognition.

Main activities

• Travel to numerous locations in France to photograph insects
• Organise, lead, and participate in a field campaign for in-situ insect photography with other team members
• Carry out a first identification of observed bees when possible
• Label and annotate photographs and populate a database
• Monitor the quality, coherence, and traceability of data
• Train a vision model for taxonomic identification of bees (and potentially hoverflies) with support from experienced colleagues
• Write observation reports, field reports, and technical notes

Constraints: the role involves risks related to field inventories in mountain environments.

Required profile

• Training in field entomology
• General knowledge of the environment and classification of organisms
• Interest in the taxonomic identification of wild bees and/or hoverflies
• Skills in data management and analysis
• Basic knowledge of the legal and ethical framework
• Ability to use models coded in R or Python
• Strong organisational skills and ability to work in a team
• Good level of English
