The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) invites applications for a permanent, full-time position as Senior Lecturer in Bioenergy Technology (equivalent to Associate Professor). The role is tenured and based at the Department of Energy and Technology in Uppsala, Sweden.

SLU is a world-class university in the bio- and environmental sciences, dedicated to advancing sustainable living through science and education. The Department of Energy and Technology conducts research and education on technologies and systems for the production, conversion, and utilization of biomass and other biological resources. Activities include the development of technical processes, energy and circular systems, and environmental impact analysis from a systems perspective, in close collaboration with society and industry.

Bioenergy is a core area, with research spanning from biomass properties to conversion into heat, electricity, and transport fuels. The work is experimental, linking fundamental studies with practical applications. The department collaborates with the biogas group at the Department of Molecular Sciences and the research institute RISE, and engages in interdisciplinary efforts focused on sustainable energy systems.

Teaching is primarily within the MSc in Engineering programmes in Energy Systems and Bioresource Systems, including courses such as Bioenergy – Technology and Systems (10 credits) and Energy Systems Planning (10 credits), as well as project courses and degree projects. A new MSc in Engineering in Bioresource Systems will include an energy track throughout the programme.

Subject Description

The subject encompasses the development of resource-efficient and environmentally sustainable technologies for the supply and conversion of biomass into heat, electricity, and transport fuels.

Duties

• Develop and lead internationally successful research within the subject area
• Strategically lead and participate in teaching at first, second, and third cycle levels, primarily teaching bioenergy in the MSc in Engineering programmes offered wholly or partly by SLU
• Contribute to other educational components at first, second, and third cycle levels where the subject is included
• Supervise doctoral students
• Develop and maintain national and international networks with academia, public authorities, industry, organisations, and society
• Apply for external research funding
• Contribute to the strategic development of the department, faculty, and university
• Communicate research findings and relevant information to society
• Perform administrative duties within the department, faculty, and university
• Be able to teach in Swedish within four years

Swedish and English are used in parallel at the department. The senior lecturer should be able to perform the majority of duties in English, but as a public authority, SLU has Swedish as its main language according to the Language Act.

Eligibility Requirements

• PhD or equivalent scientific competence
• Research expertise in technologies for the supply and conversion of biomass into heat, electricity, and transport fuels
• Teaching expertise and the ability to integrate research and a scientific approach into teaching
• Good knowledge of English

Assessment Criteria

Primary consideration is given to the level of skill required for eligibility. Suitability is assessed based on:

• A record of completed and ongoing research contributions within the subject area
• Ability to independently initiate and conduct outstanding research
• Ability to obtain external research funding in competition
• Planning, implementation, examination, and evaluation of own teaching
• Supervision and examination of doctoral students
• Ability to integrate research and a scientific approach into teaching and pedagogical practice
• Pedagogic vision and reflection

Additional expertise considered:

• Developing and leading activities within academia
• Collaborating with relevant stakeholders and society
• Communicating research findings and development

It is particularly meritorious if the applicant has knowledge of Nordic energy systems. Proficiency in Swedish or another Scandinavian language is also an advantage. Equal weight is given to teaching and research expertise. The position will be offered to the candidate who, following a qualitative comprehensive assessment, is deemed to have the best qualifications.

This is a tenured position (Swedish “universitetslektor”) approximately equivalent to Senior Lecturer (UK) or Associate Professor (US).
