Job for Researchers: Technician in Insect Virology — Wageningen University

About the role

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is seeking a motivated technician to join the Insect Virology group within the Laboratory of Virology. In this role, you will support ongoing research on insect viruses, focusing on the NWO Vici project “Invisible influencers: How hidden virus infections shape insect life”. You will be responsible for continuous insect rearing and assist researchers and students in preparing and conducting experiments.

Responsibilities

• Rearing several insect species to support research activities
• Assisting PhD candidates, postdocs, and BSc/MSc students with experiment preparation and execution
• Collaborating with a team of six technicians, sharing general organizational and administrative tasks
• Contributing to smooth laboratory operations and supporting staff and students

Your team

You will work in the Insect Virology group under Dr. Vera Ros. The group studies insect–virus interactions, including viral manipulation of behaviour, virus discovery, covert infections, and biological control. The Laboratory of Virology, part of the Plant Sciences Group, comprises about 35 staff members and hosts ~25 BSc/MSc students annually for final-year research. The lab conducts fundamental research on plant viruses, insect viruses, and arboviruses, with applications in food production and health.

Requirements

• HBO-level (higher professional education) degree in (micro)biology or as a biological technician
• Experience working with insects
• Experience with molecular techniques is an advantage
• Driven, eager to learn, precise in experimental work
• Able to work independently and switch between tasks efficiently
• Good communication skills and willingness to collaborate
• Willingness to carry out structured rearing tasks and general support duties
• English proficiency at B2 level or higher (employer offers support if needed)

• Gross salary between €3,057 and €3,985 per month (scale 7) for a 38-hour workweek, based on experience
