About the Role

The Department of Environmental Science at Aarhus University invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral researcher position in soil microbial ecology. The focus is on investigating the effects of biochar on soil microorganisms in Danish agricultural soils. This interdisciplinary project combines long-term field studies and shorter-term laboratory experiments to assess the potential and challenges of biochar amendment for soil health and the living microbiome.

Key research areas include the influence of different biochar feedstocks and concentrations on the soil microbiome, interactions between biochar and biofilm-forming microorganisms, and relationships among microbes, invertebrates, and plant roots. The position also aims to deepen understanding of biofilm formation on biochar particles, including possible biochar-degrading or modifying microorganisms, and the functional and genetic activity of those organisms.

The expected start date is 1 October 2026, with the contract ending 30 September 2028.

Responsibilities

  • Collect soil from field sites across Denmark in collaboration with fellow scientists and field station personnel.
  • Plan and execute field and laboratory experiments.
  • Generate, analyse, and report laboratory data.
  • Disseminate research findings through international peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
  • Collaborate as an integral member of the research team, particularly within the Danish Biochar Long-Term Experiment (Danish Biochar LTE).
  • Supervise early-career scientists and contribute to a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional team.

Your Profile

Essential Qualifications

  • PhD in environmental microbiology, agronomy, environmental science, or molecular biology.
  • Research experience in soil environmental molecular microbial ecology and soil health.
  • Experience in planning and executing fieldwork and laboratory work with minimal supervision.
  • Skilled in analysing eDNA and eRNA from soil environments.
  • Skilled in aseptic techniques for isolating and culturing individual soil microorganisms.
  • Knowledge of climate-mitigating actions in agriculture.
  • Evidence of original research presented at national and international meetings.
  • An emerging publication record in international peer-reviewed ISI journals.
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Willingness to carry out autonomous field research.
