About the position

We are seeking a PhD researcher to join the ClimatePine project, a collaboration between the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), Metsähallitus Forestry Ltd, and the University of Helsinki. The project aims to study the adaptability of Scots pine and enhance climate resilience through tree breeding and optimal deployment.

Job Description

The PhD researcher will complete a doctoral thesis aligned with the ClimatePine project plan. Research topics include genetic variation in growth rhythm and stress resilience of Scots pine, phenotypic plasticity, and optimal deployment of forest reproductive materials in a changing climate. The project also examines realized genetic gains—how stands established with improved materials have grown and developed across different regions of Finland.

Various research materials and methods will be used, including field trial measurements, geospatial data, laboratory experiments, and genomic data. The researcher’s role and thesis content will be tailored to their skills and interests.

The project is conducted in collaboration with Luke, Metsähallitus Forestry Ltd, and the University of Helsinki. The PhD researcher will be employed by Luke and will spend approximately six months at Metsähallitus Forestry Ltd. The University of Helsinki (Prof. Pyhäjärvi) will provide supervision for the doctoral degree, but the candidate must separately apply to the university’s doctoral program.

The role requires presence at the Luke location (Helsinki or Oulu) and participation in field and laboratory work.

Qualifications and Requirements

• A master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., agriculture and forestry, biology, statistics).
• Knowledge and/or interest in quantitative genetics, tree breeding, statistical methodology, and the use of genomic tools in breeding and evolutionary biology.
• A clear interest in applying this expertise to practical silviculture.
• Good cooperation and communication skills due to the collaborative nature of the project.
• Good written and oral English skills; proficiency in Finnish is a significant advantage, as some databases are in Finnish and stakeholder collaboration is involved.
• Willingness to participate in field measurements and sampling; a driving license (AB) is useful.

• The selected candidate may need to undergo a standard security clearance vetting (Security Clearance Act 726/2014).

• Position level: Specialist.
• Remote work: Possible within Finland, with practices agreed with the supervisor; regular face-to-face meetings are also held.
• Fixed-term employment due to the nature of the work.
• Working time: Office hours.
• Trial period: Half the duration of the contract, but not exceeding six months.
• Salary: The position is at complexity level 6 in Luke’s salary system, with a base salary of EUR 3,014.85 per month. A personal performance component (max. 50% of base salary) is also paid; for new employees, this typically ranges from 15–20%. Applicants may submit a separate salary request.
