About the position

Luke is seeking a Doctoral Researcher for a fixed-term position, offering an opportunity for an article-based PhD on performance-based policy instruments for cost-efficient reduction of nutrient loading.

Job Description

The Doctoral Researcher will develop and apply analytical and numerical models addressing nutrient cycling (nitrogen and phosphorus) as part of economic optimisation of agricultural production, from both firm and societal regulator perspectives. The work aims to analyse the effectiveness of existing performance-based policy instruments and to develop new results-oriented environmental policy approaches for managing agricultural nutrient flows.

The doctoral research topic is partly linked to the GREENHOOD project (EU Horizon Europe), which examines nutrient recycling, reduction of environmental impacts from agriculture, and circular economy solutions from regional and societal perspectives. Research focuses particularly on a Finnish case study (the Archipelago Sea catchment area), but the dissertation is not required to be limited exclusively to the project’s themes and can be developed more broadly as an environmental economic analysis of performance-based policy and operational models.

The Doctoral Researcher will participate in preparing scientific articles and research supporting policy design. Work can be carried out with flexible hours and partly remotely. The employment contract is initially for two years, with the aim of enabling continuation through complementary funding. The work may include participation in preparing continuation funding and research funding applications, supported by senior researchers.

Our Expectations of the Applicant

We are seeking a highly motivated Doctoral Researcher with the potential to develop into a leading expert in performance-based systems and readiness to produce an article-based doctoral dissertation, including practical fieldwork with stakeholders. The selected candidate is expected to apply for the right to pursue doctoral studies at a suitable university, unless they already hold an active doctoral study right. Luke supports establishing doctoral supervision arrangements in cooperation with university partners.

We expect:

  • A relevant Master’s degree in economics, environmental and natural resource economics, agricultural economics, industrial engineering and management, systems analysis, or a closely related field
  • Strong skills in mathematical modelling and quantitative analysis
  • Interest in research on environmental policy, agricultural nutrient loading, and performance-based policy instruments
  • Readiness to pursue an article-based doctoral dissertation
  • Fluent command of the English language

Qualifications considered an advantage:

  • Programming experience, for example with Python, Matlab, GAMS, or Julia
  • Studies in environmental economics, agricultural economics, or nutrient cycling
  • Experience with optimisation models, systems analysis, or policy evaluation
  • Familiarity with EU agricultural policy or research projects
  • Previous experience in scientific writing or stakeholder-oriented work
  • Fluent command of the Finnish language
